Are you tired of alt-clicking the cmd icon and choosing "Run as administrator" 70 times a day? Well I am.

Create a copy of cmd.exe in C:\Windows; rename it Elevatecmd.exe (or whatever) and set the Run As Administrator checkbox in Properties – Compatibility tab. The icon should show a shield icon after that, now you can just pin it to your start menu and you're good to go.

It's unlikely that many people will ever actually hit these limits (if you do, you probably need to take a fundamental look at your infrastructure architecture and how you support it!) but I thought I'd post them anyhow - they may be useful to someone somewhere :-)

- maximum number of GPOs that can apply to a user/computer: 999
- maximum number of DNS servers in an AD-integrated zone (without manually adding the details): 850 (Windows 2000), 1300 (Windows 2003)

Linux es el sistema mas cool, es mas guay que las supernenas, un montón de “entendidos” y MegaHackersDelCoponCorredoresDeScripts usan Linux, cuando les preguntas ¿Por qué? Te responderán claramente que por seguridad y estabilidad.

Cuando sale un fallo en Windows todos se agarran los pelos y claman y berrean como los talasianos en Star Treck, da lo mismo la índole y el alcance del fallo, aunque el parche este al dia siguiente, cientos de blogs se harán eco del fallo.

Sin embargo nadie hablara de lo que pase con Linux, la razón es que “no es lo mismo” (entre comillas), ¿como vamos a criticarle a un par de chavales Finlandeses que programaron un driver para CDRom en sus ratos libres que su driver tenga un buffer overflow y que este permita a un atacante local sobrescribir el espacio de memoria del Kernel? (CVE-2006-2935).

¿os imagináis el cachondeo si esto pasa con Windows?, ¿Cuánto tiempo tardara la gente en parchear?, ¿y los de Debian :-D?, ¿Cuánto tardaran en sacar el parche?, ¿pero que provocara el parche en otros módulos programados por mas chavales Finlandeses?

Habrá quien me diga que tengo mala leche que lo he hecho a traición esperando uno de estos, pero no. Tengo para elegir, solo ayer y perdonarme que meta BDS en el saco:

How can I restrict rights for a group of users on a specific OU of computers, but not on any computers outside of that OU?

In other words, I don't want this set of users to see the floppy drive, be able to right click, open calculator, etc., when they are using any of the machines within the OU, BUT have full access rights when they are using machines outside of the OU. All the machines and users are in the same domain. Essentially, is it possible to have a GPO (that restricts user rights extensively) apply to a group/OU of users only when they login to a specific group/OU of machines?

EXPERT RESPONSE

This sounds like a classic case for using loopback policy processing. As you know, the users are getting the policies which apply to their user accounts based on where they are in Active Directory, and likewise for machines. Loopback means that you can get a machine to process policies which have user settings and apply these to users which log on to them, even though that user policy may not be linked to where the real user account is. This is perfect for things like internet kiosk machines or terminal servers which typically need very specific settings that you don't want to apply to your users normally.

So how do you set it up?

Create and link a policy to the OU where the machines are and edit it. Under Administrative TemplatesSystemGroup Policy, you want to configure the setting for "User Group Policy loopback processing mode." You need to choose a mode -- "replace" will ignore all the user's own settings and only use those settings which are in scope for the machine (so linked to your special OU), whereas "merge" will use both, and the machine's looped-back user settings will take precedence in the case of any conflict.

So here we are setting a group policy to tell Group Policy how to function! You can set the user settings you want in this same policy to keep it all together, or link specific user policies to the OU in the normal way.

I got a question about getting the admin tools to work with Vista today. I don’t use Vista for this purpose but I thought I would pass it along, as we get closer to the final I know more people will use it to do admin type work.

In Vista beta 2 you cannot install the Windows 2003 admin tools pack because of the version checking. To get around this you need to remove the check from the installer. After that you can install them and administer until your heart is content.

First download and install the Windows 2003 SP1 SDK. (This is a lengthy install.)
Next download and install the Windows Vista and WinFX runtime components (ORCA). (This is a lengthy install.)
Download the Windows Server 2003 SP1 Admin Tools Pack.
Next extract the admin tools by running the exe with the switches /T: <path> /C - or just /C will bring up a window allowing you to specify the target folder to extract to.
In the directory where you extracted the admin pack tools right click the file adminpak.msi, and choose Edit with Orca.
In the Tables view select LaunchCondition, then in the right window select Condition and then select Transform —> New transform.
Edit Condition to = (MsiNTSuitePersonal <> 1) AND ((VersionNT = 501 AND (ServicePackLevel >= 1 OR QFE_DSPROP = "Yes")) OR (VersionNT = 502 AND ServicePackLevel <= AdminpakServicePackLevel ) ) to ‘Condition’ = (MsiNTSuitePersonal <> 1) AND ((VersionNT = 501 AND (ServicePackLevel >= 1 OR QFE_DSPROP = "Yes")) OR (VersionNT = 600 AND ServicePackLevel <= AdminpakServicePackLevel ) )
Choose File —> Save Transformed as…<file name of your choice.msi>
Close ORCA.
And then run the install of the admin pack…

A frequent question among our FSRM users is how to set FSRM quotas on a server cluster. Georgi Matev, the FSRM PM, responds:

Configuring a quota on a folder must be done on the node that currently owns the volume on which the folder is located. Once configured, the quota will automatically move with the volumes as it fails over (no admin intervention is required). The reason why this is possible is that quota metadata is stored in a metadata file on each volume under the System Volume Information folder. Quota templates are global configuration and could be configured from any one node. This information is stored in the cluster database, which is registry based.
